Fire broke out at the Chandni Chowk Market near Nilkhet and at the Apex Tyre factory of Apex Polymer Group in the city’s Bijoy Sarani on Wednesday.
Chandni Chowk Market’s fire broke out at 1:25pm on the ground floor of the market, said Rojina akter, Duty Officer of fire service and civil defence control room.
Four units of firefighters brought the fire under control, she said.
No casualty was reported while the cause of the fire could not be known immediately.
On the other hand, Russel Shikdar, duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defense control room, said Apex Tyre factory’s fire broke out around 3am and spread rapidly.
On information, 12 firefighting units went to the spot and brought the fire under control around 5:05am.
Fire service officials said there are a foam factory and tire warehouse at the scene. It is believed that the fire started from the foam factory. There was a huge stockpile of hazardous chemicals.
Eyewitness Azad Hossain said, ‘There was a loud noise around 2.30 am last night. Then I came and saw the fire burning. Calling 999 immediately, the fire service arrived at the scene.
Debashish Vardhan, Deputy Director of Fire Service said the whole factory was burnt to ashes. The iron pots have burned and faded. Chemical drums are arranged in layers.
The fire official said, “If all the chemical drums here had caught fire properly, it would have been difficult to control.”
