State Minister for Information Tarana Halim said film portrays the culture and heritage of a country and it also helps recognise and preserve the history of a nation. She came up with the observation on Tuesday while addressing the closing ceremony of the 10th International Inter-university Short Film Festival- 2018 at Dhaka University (DU).
Dhaka University Film Society with support from UNHCR organised the short film festival at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) on the DU campus. Tarana said: “Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman understood long before that cultural independence was very important apart from political, economic and social freedom. That’s why he underscored the need for cultural freedom in the constitution. And this is the culture that makes him the poet of politics”.
DU Pro-VC (Administration) Dr Muhammad Samad, UNHCR deputy representative Papa kysma Sylla and eminent filmmaker Morshedul Islam were, among others, present on this occasion.
The organisers of the festival received a total of 635 films from 71 countries. Top 100 films were screened at TSC, including special session of screening short film on refugee.
The inaugural session of the 10th International Inter-university Short Film Festival was held at the Goethe Institute Bangladesh on August 19, 2018 while the second screening session at Alliance Francaise de Dhaka on August 29-30, 2018.
