Filling of historical pond going on in Barisal

Filling of historical pond of a church is going on Sunday even after 14 people of Christian community were injured in the attack of lawyers for protesting that on Saturday.
After visiting the spot it was seen that police escort at court premises barring photo journalists to enter inside the court premise and take photo of speedily advancing historical pond filling.
To do the work speedily we engaged pumps and dredger, one of the workers denying disclosing identity said.
Due to that Barisal Court Compound was covered by water from the filled pond on Sunday suffering justice seekers.
On other hand Norbert Nipu Adhikari, president Barisal Christian Association, said they feeling most insecure to protest and protect of their grabbed property as the work is going on by police, administration supported pro-ruling party lawyers.
On Monday we will handed over memorandum of protest, but we fear that filling of pond would be completed soon, Nipu said.
Mentionable a group of AL-backed lawyers of Barisal district bar association on Saturday attacking Christian community people injured 14 including 10 females and a journalist.
The attackers dispersed a human chain protesting construction of court building grabbing church property and violating environment laws by filling historical pond.
The attackers forced Christian community people to take shelter inside the church snatching banners, placards, festoons and loud speakers of the human chain.
The attack was led by Advocate Jahangir Hossain, AL leader and former president, Advocate Mamun, Advocate Enayet and other members of district Bar Association.
There are a lot of lands inside the court compound to be selected as alternative site of the proposed construction without grabbing the land of church and violating the environment act, the Christian community leaders said.
Shanti Mandal, representative Church of Bangladesh in Barisal, said Public Works Department from April 9 started filling the pond of Barisal Saint Peter’s Church adjacent to Barisal district judge court complex for construction of a 10-storied court building.
That large pond on 52 decimal of land was excavated for bathing of Christians during their Baptizing at Barisal Saint Peter’s Church constructed in 1849 on 1.5 acres of land leased from British PWD and later it was recorded as property of the church.
