THERE is no accurate statistics prepared by the government health services how many people so far have been died being infected by corona-like disease; such as fever, cough and cold. If we follow the media reports, the number of deaths due to corona-like symptoms is too many. Besides, death of some minor boys and girls – age ranging from six to eight or ten — has raised another question about the target group of this virus in this region. Reports said a 10-month-old baby has been infected with coronavirus in Chattogram. What’s more frustrating is that the testing facilities have not yet available in all district hospitals and the number of the test kit is also very limited. The scarcity of test kits and corona hospitals has made the situation worst. Without the testing, determining COVID-19 is impossible. The rate of tests per million in Bangladesh is among the lowest in the world, while the recovery rate is also the lowest in the world. Poor healthcare system, lack of preparedness and relaxed lockdown are to be blamed for the exponential rate of infections.
Pandemic data site Worldometer puts Bangladesh’s test rate above the three worst-performing countries – North Korea, Nigeria and Myanmar. World Health Organisation suggests widespread tests. But who cares! The percentage of patients recovering from coronavirus infection in Bangladesh currently stands at just 2.57%, lowest among both South Asian countries and nations which were hit the hardest by the pandemic. In between March 8 and April 21, only 87 people or merely 2.57% of the patients recovered from the infection. Compared to South Asian nations, India recorded a 17.24% recovery rate while Pakistan has a 21.67% recovery rate. The global recovery rate was nearly 27%. On the other hand, the number of infected people is increasing day by day in our country.
Probably, Bangladesh is the only country in the world where fake masks, fake testing kits and other fake protective equipment are recovered by the law enforcing agencies when other countries are facing the pandemic with their sincere and honest efforts. If these were not caught, those were certainly supplied to hospitals and doctors to make an increase in the infection rate.
