Bangladesh Football Federation’s Women’s wing Chairman and FIFA Council member Mahfuza Akter Kiron was granted bail on Tuesday in a defamation case filed against her under Section
500 of the Bangladesh Penal Code. Magistrate Sabbir Yasir Ahmed Chowdhury of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka granted her bail till April 2 for Tk 10,000 bond on Tuesday afternoon, said Kiron’s counsel Liakat Hossain.
“This is a bailable case. In addition, the court considered her social status and her illness in granting the bail,” Liakat told newsmen, adding that his client is a patient of cancer disease.
The BFF and FIFA official was arrested and sent to the jail on March 16 in a case filed on March 12 by sports organiser Abu Hassan Prince, under Bangladesh Penal Code 500 for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Amnesty International issued a press release on Monday demanding her immediate release. FIFA and AFC (Asian Football Confederation) also expressed deep concern over the arrest of the women football official.
