The Regional Spices Research Centre (RSRC), Gazipur of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) was a Field Day on production technology of year round cultivable BARI Onion-5 at the RSRC research field of the Institute on Wednesday. A total of 100 farmers participated in the field day funded by the ‘Strengthening of Spice National Crop Research in Bangladesh’ Project.
BARI Director General Dr. Debasish Sarker inaugurated the field day as chief guest while Chief Scientific Officer of Regional Spices Research Centre Dr. Haridas Chandra Mohanta presided over the function. Director (Support and Services) Dr. Md. Kamrul Hasan, Director (Research) Dr. Md. Tariqul Islam were present as special guests. Principal Scientific Officer of Spices Research Center and Project Director Dr. Shailendra Nath Mozumder gave the welcome address. Scientific Officer of RSRC, Gazipur, Nibedita Nath conducted the function. Scientists, officers, staff and labors RSRC were also participated on the occasion. Speakers on the field day said that BARI Onion-5 is a short-term summer crop suitable for planting in advance and nabi kharif season but high yielding variety suitable for year round cultivation. The height of each tree is 50-55 cm and each tree has 10-12 leaves. The tuber is round and reddish in color.
The average weight of each tuber is about 90-100 grams. The national average yield of onion in Bangladesh is 10.56 tons per hectare but the yield of BARI onion-5 is 18-22 tons per hectare. Summer BARI Onion-5 can be grown in early cultivation from March to June and in Nabi cultivation from August to October.
