Field Day on BARI invented Panikachu variety held

The Tuber Crops Research Centre (TCRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) has arranged a field day on BARI invented different Panikachu crop varieties at Dossu Narayanpur village under Kapasia Sadar Union of Gazipur on Monday .
The field day ceremony was. Around 50 farmers of the area participated in the field day which was held at farmer Afzal Hossain’s field. The program was funded by ‘Strengthening food and nutritional security through enrichment of gene pool, research, technological innovation and dissemination of improved varieties of aroids crop program’.
BARI Director (TCRC) Dr. Sohela Akhter inaugurated the field day as chief guest. The Program Director and Senior Scientific Officer of TCRC Dr. Md. Shamshul Alam presided over the function while Principal Scientific Officer of TCRC Dr. Md. Mosharraf Hossain Molla, Kapasia Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer Sumon Kumar Basak and Kapasia Sadar Union Parishad Chairman Mr. Sakhawat Hossain Pradhan were present as special guests.
Speaking as chief guest, BARI Director (TCRC) Dr. Sohela Akhter highlighted the nutritional value of kachu crop and suggested to eat more kachu to eliminate anemia. He said that the varieties of Kachu crop invented by BARI do not stick to the throat and are evenly cooked, there is no crunch feeling.
Besides, as these varieties are high yielding, its cultivation has increased all over the country. As a result, the production area and total production of kachu crop has almost doubled in the last 20 years. He mentioned that Panikachu Lati and Mukhi Kachu are being exported abroad to meet the demand of the country.
