Freedom fighter Salauddin Jangi Chowdhury (76), a student leader of the 80’s, former joint general secretary of East Pakistan Students Union of Chittagong district and later NAP leader, died of a heart attack.
He died at a private hospital in the city on Friday. He was buried at the family graveyard at Garibullah Shah Mazar after Jumu’ah prayers. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
He is the son of the late LA Chowdhury, a prominent politician and social activist from the undivided Indian subcontinent, and a cousin of former minister Abdullah Al Noman. Abdullah Al Noman, the founding chairman of East Delta University, said he was a gifted student, recalling the death of his longtime political colleague and brother Salauddin Jangi. While a student at the Government Commerce College, he became involved in politics and played an active role in the anti-Ayub movement and Bangladesh’s freedom struggle. In his death, the country has lost a conscious good citizen.
