A fertilizer laden cargo capsized into river Bhairab at Gilatala Barakpur Ghat area under Khanjahan Ali Police Station in Khulna city at dead night on Tuesday.
160 metric tons fertilizer were loaded in the cargo which capsized in the area due to collision with river dredger.
Nine persons manage to escape with the help of local people who were in the cargo named MV-Mirzagonj. The cargo was coming towards Nowapara after leaving Mongla taking with fertilizer at around 11.45 Pm. the cargo collided with a dredger and capsized into the river.
Sources said, Mirzagonj cargo capsized due to leaking its bottom side because the blade of the dredger named Bango meghna was sharp. Local people rushed to the spot with a boat and rescued the nine person.
Ali Hossain a local inhabitant said, sand-lifters were raising sand from the river with drums by seating dredger machine on the middle of the river and there are no signal lights, for this reason the accident occurred.
Abdul Motaleb, Engineman (Shareng) of the cargo said, generally, signal lights are shown at night but during the incident no signal light was found, when the signal was given, we had nothing to do. within short time the cargo capsized into the river.
On the other hand, Samadul Islam, Sub assistant engineer of bang-Meghna claimed that despite sufficient signal lights, the accident occurred unfortunately.
The cargo was under the water till filing this report at 12.35 Pm on Thursday (08.11.2018)
