Fertiliser laden cargo capsizes in Meghna River

Some 12,500 bags TSP fertiliser laden cargo MV Sindhu has capsized near Kaliganj under Ulania Union of Mehendiganj upazila in Barisal district on Thursday early morning by the hit of triple-deck passenger launch MV Tipu-7 and oil-tanker MT Nurjahan.
Ten staff of the capsized cargo succeeded to save life by swimming to the shore.
Ujjal Kumar Dey, Mehendiganj police station officer- in -charge, acknowledging the facts, said Swapan Haoladar, a crew of the capsized cargo lodged a general diary with this police station on Thursday afternoon and police deployed near the spot.
In the general dairy, Swapan Haoladar said that the fertiliser laden cargo was going to Ashuganj from Mongla.
The capsized cargo crew alleged that passenger launch MV Tipu-7 first hit the cargo and when the cargo crews trying to manage the vessel going to again oil-tanker MT Nurjahan hit the cargo vessel.
Then within a short time the cargo vessel capsized with laden 625 tons fertiliser in 12,500 bags worth Tk 13 lakhs and the crews and staffs jumping to river succeeded to save their lives by swimming, Swapan told.
The cargo was owned by one Farid Hossain and he trying to contact with him, the cargo staff told.
Md. Kamal Hossain, supervisor of MV Tipu-7 launch owned by Jatiya Party leader and former lawmaker Golam Kibria Tipu, denied their any connection with the incident.Md. Shohidullah, deputy director Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authourity and Barisal port officer, said he heard about the incident and will visit the spot and take action after be informed officially .
