Ferry with 2,500 migrants from Greek islands arrives in Piraeus

A ferry carrying about 2,500 migrants who had arrived clandestinely on Greek islands from the nearby Turkish coast has docked in Greece’s main port of Piraeus near Athens.
The ferry arriving Thursday was chartered by the government and served as a registration centre on the eastern Aegean island of Kos this week.
Hundreds of migrants continue to arrive on the Greek holiday island of Kos, as German Chancellor Angela Merkel warns the issue of migration is much more of a challenge for Europe than the Greek debt crisis. Greece is asking its EU partners for a comprehensive strategy to help deal with the crisis, as new data shows 21,000 refugees landed on Greek shores last
week alone. Kirsty Basset reports.

It left Kos on Wednesday with 1,300 migrants and picked up hundreds more from the islands of Leros, Kalymnos and Lesbos before sailing overnight to Piraeus.
