Our Correspondent :
After eight days of closure due to a navigability issue, ferry services restarted in the Shimulia-Kathalbari route on a trial basis.
Three ferries with vehicles on board left Shimulia ghat for Kathalbari ghat at 4:30pm on Friday.
Mohammad Faisal, Assistant Manager (Business), of Shimulia ghat branch of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), confirmed the news.
He said: “We have been informed by BIWTA that the channel’s navigability has been restored by dredging.
“That is why we have started ferry services on a trial basis. The ferry Jahangir and ferry Kakoli from ghat no. 2 and the ferry Camellia from ghat no. 3 have left from Shimulia. If these three ferries reach Kathalbari ghat without any hindrance, the ferry services will be continued.”
He added that at the moment there is not much traffic at Shimulia ghat. There are some cargo trucks and pickups only.
Passengers suffered immensely as the ferry service at Shimulia Ghat, known as the gateway to South Bengal, was closed for eight days since last Thursday due to the navigability crisis.
