Erosion of River Muhuri: Feni Muhuri Irrigation Project threatened

The condition of Feni Muhuri Irrigation Project established at Sonagazi in greater Noakhali has been threatened due to erosion of River Muhuri while no supervision and reformation has done and as such its structural shape is being deteriorated day by day
Source said for lacking of supervision and reformation, the upper part of the project from approach to last part has extended wholes.
According to the sources, country’s 2nd largest irrigation project established in 1985 at Sonagazi of Feni district in the year 1985-86 that ended in 1986.
Sources said to prevent river break down and to save Sonagazi along with other some upazilas from the tide the Muhuri river. After the establishment of the project Feni head quarter along with Sonagazi, Chagalnaiya, Fulgazi with a part of Parashuram upazila and some area of Mirashwarai of Chittagong was brought under the irrigation project while around 40.080 hectares, 27,125 hectares were brought under cultivable land and230.076 hectare land area was brought under irrigation facility: The project was set up targeting crop production of seventy thousand tonnes. But despite the setting up of the regulator of the project he target was not achieved so far, anyhow local farmers informed that for not canal reformation, canal digging and for not supplying adequate amount of water during the dry season, the farmers of were fetching water for cultivation with the help of sallow power pumps for many days from Muhuri River and consequently for reduction of the navigability thousands of cultivators of many upazilas had been incurring loss and economic hard up. Some elderly cultivators said with sadness that they were sitting on way for no function of the irritation project of Feni.
According ‘to source, the budget for the overseeing and maintenance was 216.18 lakh taka per years But notwithstanding the budget why isn’t it being implemented is the question of the common farmers and people.
When contact Md. Kohinur Alam, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board, told this correspondent that the repair “and maintenance work wasn’t being possible for the crisis of necessary finance.
