Female MPs urged to play key role for gender equality

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has urged the female Members of Parliament (MPs) to play a stronger role in attaining gender equality to build an inclusive society.
“It is essential to ensure gender equality to attain the Planet 50-50 and the Sustainable Development Goals (by 2030) not leaving anyone behind. Women MPs can play a very important role here,” she said at an international conference joining from the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
The inaugural ceremony of the 13th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament was held in the Austrian capital of Vienna, said a Parliament handout on Tuesday.
Dr Chaudhury stressed the need for enhancing the power and effectiveness of a parliament as the centre for democracy to prevent violence against women and protect their rights.
“We’ll have to remove gender disparity for making future developed and building the society as more inclusive one,” she said urging all for playing stronger role in preventing violence against women (VAW).
The Covid-19 pandemic is not only affecting the economy and health sector, but it is also deepening the crisis related to the social disparity and violence against women (VAW).
President of Austrian Federal Council Andrea Eder-Gitschthaler, Second President of Austrian National Council Doris Bures, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Gabriela Cuevas Barron, among others, spoke on the occasion.
A parliamentary team from Bangladesh remained connected virtually with the function.
