State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Sunday said actions will be taken against the rapists of a female police constable in the capital.
“This is a heinous crime…the responsible policeman will be tried under the police law. If the accused police official is found guilty he will get proper punishment,” he said. The state minister was talking to reporters after a programme at Radisson Hotel in the city. A female police constable of Turag Police Station on Saturday brought an allegation that her estranged husband, an assistant sub-inspector of police, along with his five cohorts raped her in a house on Wednesday at Tilpapara in Khilgaon area.
About the allegation of destroying evidence of the gang-rape to protect the criminals, the junior minister said, “This is not true. The government is committed to restoring discipline in police force.”
Replying to a question whether the government is trying to save Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of ruling party MP Pinu Khan, from the charges of double murder, he said, “The government never spares terrorists, no matter how powerful they are.”
“The government will never spare anyone whether he or she is a minister, MP or his or her son or relatives if they are involved in crimes. No one is above the law,” he said.
Asaduzzaman also said the case has been handed over to Detective Branch (DB) to make the investigation more transparent. On April 13, Bakhtiar Alam Rony, said to be a drug addict, allegedly opened fire on people indiscriminately near Janakantha Bhaban in New Eskaton area from his car, leaving two people-rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim and Janakantha’s auto-rickshaw driver Yakub-injured with bullets.
Hakim succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on April 15 while Yeakub died at the hospital on April 23. On April 15, a case was filed with Ramna Police Station against unidentified people in this connection.
