A portion of the under-construction Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover was opened to traffic on Wednesday.
The FDC-Hotel Sonargaon point is now allowed for movement of vehicles only to get down on the Tejgaon-Panthapath link road.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain inaugurated the portion of the flyover.
“The flyover would develop the capital’s communications system and ease traffic congestion. The entire flyover would be opened to traffic next month,” the Minister said.
Khandaker Mosharraf louded the construction firms for working in an organised way even after midnight in the busy project areas. The minister assured the people, especially of Malibagh where water logging is a perennial problem, of resolving it after completing the flyover construction.
“The water-logging would not be seen in the area after completion of the flyover construction,” he asserted.
LGRD Secretary Abdul Malek along with other high officials from the government and representatives from the construction firms were present at the inaugural programme.
On the other hand, local people alleged faulty designs, prolonged construction work and fatal accidents in the project areas caused serious sufferings to them.
The 450-meter long ramp was designed to get down in front of the FDC gate and some structures had been constructed in accordance with the design.
Following a Prime Minister’s office directive, the ramp had been extended from FDC gate to Hotel Sonargaon after demolishing the built-up structures.
Sushanta Kumar Paul, the flyover project director said the cost of construction of the ramp was estimated at Tk 45 crore. About 95 per cent work of the entire flyover had so far been completed.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the first phase of the 2.1-kilometre Holy Family-Satrasta section of the flyover for traffic on March 30 on last year.
The 8.7-kilometre flyover’s work started in February 2013 under the supervision of the Local Government and Engineering Department.
Last year the government raised the cost of the flyover for the third time to Tk 1,218.89 crore from Tk 772.7 crore and extended deadline also for third time from December 2015 to June this year.
