Business Desk :
The government should set up testing labs at ports to ensure fast delivery of imported goods and products for uninterrupted production, said Md Jashim Uddin, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI).
He made the call in the second meeting of the standing committee on port and shipping of the FBCCI held at its office in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Products imported through Chattogram port are sent to the capital for testing, which takes weeks or months delaying the delivery, increasing the cost of business, and disrupting the production, Jashim Uddin said.
That is why the government should establish testing labs at the port, he said.
FBCCI Senior Vice President Mostofa Azad Chowdhury Babu urged businesses to harness the potential of land ports as India has given free transit to Bangladesh.
Earlier, the members of the standing committee complained that the customs officials remain very enthusiastic to penalise importers for any mistake with the harmonised system code or HS code, as the officials receive 15 per cent incentive on the fines imposed.
