Business Desk :
The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) assured the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) team that it will help manufacture Oxyjet, an inexpensive alternative to the costly high-flow nasal cannula devices invented by the BUET recently.
FBCCI President Jashim Uddin said this while talking to a five-member delegation led by Dr Toufiq Hasan from the engineering university on Friday, said a press release.
Earlier on July 29, the government has approved the production and use of the cheap ventilator on a limited scale to tackle the requirement for additional oxygen for Covid-19 patients.
A BUET team led by Hasan invented the low-cost non-invasive ventilator and designed especially for Covid-19 patients’ treatment.
The device can provide high levels of oxygen to patients suffering from acute respiratory problems without having to shift them to the ICU.
The device can provide 60 litres of oxygen per minute with up to 100 percent concentration without any electricity.
Interim data of clinical trials have shown that its efficacy is non-inferior to traditional high-flow nasal cannula devices, according to the inventors.
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices that are used to provide high pressure oxygen to critical patients cost around Tk1 lakh while HFNC devices sell for Tk4-5 lakh.
In contrast, the entire setup of OxyJet costs around Tk20,000-25,000, which will drop further if produced in bulk, said Dr Hasan.
FBCCI Vice-President Amin Helali, Director Abu Naser and FBCCI CEO Mahfuzul Haque were present in event, said the release.
