The leaders of the Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) on Sunday demanded the government for the infrastructural development of country’s port for boosting economy.
The business leaders demanded this at a seminar on ‘Land Ports and Customs Station for Trade Facilitation’ at the conference room of the FBCCI in the city.
Trade and shipment process are hampering due to poor infrastructure of the port, claimed the business leaders. They demanded for modernisation of the port area. They also demanded for building modern warehouse as well as improving testing facilities. The improvement of better rail and transport connections with the port would facilitate the total export process of the country, they also said.
Addressing as the chief guest, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan said that he would submit the recommendations of the business community to inter ministerial meeting for the development of ports. “I physically visited the Akhaura port, but there has no banking branch. A branch office of NBR is existed there, but its condition is very poor”, said the minister.
He said the bypass road of Benapol port has already completed and recently it will be inaugurated. The government is planning to declare Swela port at Sylhet very soon. The work of Payra port will be completed within 2023, said the minister.
Indian High Commissioner Pankaj Saron has also underscored the need for improving the facilities of the ports for enhancing trade and business with India.
FBCCI President Matlub Ahmed chaired the seminar. About 80 per cent trade and business between Bangladesh and India are organising through Benepol port but the facililities of the port is very poor, claimed the FBCCI president He urged the government to take immediate initiatives for the development of ports of the country.
National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman also addressed the seminar.
