Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood on Sunday said Facebook addiction has become an obsession, like ‘digital cocaine addiction’.
“Nowadays, once the young generation enters Facebook, does not want to exit from there. There is a need for social revolution to overcome this situation,” Shahjahan Mahmud said.
The BTRC chairman came up with the observation at a discussion on ‘Role of telecommunication sector in the country’s graduation from the LDC group to a developing country’ at the BTRC conference room on Sunday.
He also said that internet has reached everyone’s hands through mobile phones. “However, it is disappointing that the young generation is not becoming creative by surfing the internet on mobile phones. It’s been observed that young people are mostly chatting on Facebook which is not a creative use,” the BTRC chief said.
He also said that BTRC has taken several initiatives to secure the internet. “We will propose very soon for making any arrangements for the creative user of the internet. If the operators offer a special rate for the use of Facebook as well as another rate for creative use, then they may try to gather knowledge instead of using Facebook.”
The chairman also said, “We are trying to spread internet by laying fiber optic cables miles after miles, but not taking care about the internet security.”
BTRC has submitted a proposal to the government for establishing a laboratory to provide more cyber security to the people. “If the government approves, it is not just security but different new services can be tested prior to offering people as they get the best facility.”
Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar attended the programme as the chief guest while BTRC Secretary Sarwar Alam presided over it.
