People of 240 landless families in Narsingdi have changed their fate as they are now living in five Ashrayan projects, a special scheme of the government for providing housing facilities to all homeless people.
During a visit to Ashrayan projects at Polash, Shibpur, Monohardi and Raipura upazilas of the district, this correspondent found that inhabitants in the Ashrayan projects are living better lives taking various income-generating activities. Talking to BSS, Aklima Begum, 38, a resident of Shimulartak Ashrayan project situated at Polash upazila said she started duck rearing farm in 2016 under the Ashrayan project.
“Now, I can earn monthly about Taka 5,000 to 6,000 by selling eggs and ducks,” she said adding her husband works as a day labourer. They are now happy. Her daughter and son are now going to school and they are getting their all educational expenses from their mother’s earning, she added.
Like Aklima Begum, members of 130 landless families are now living better lives in Shimulartak Ashrayan project taking various income generating projects including duck rearing, poultry farm, cow rearing, vegetables farming, fish farming, banana gardening, grocery shop and sewing clothes.
Bilkis Begum, 42, Lima Begum, 35, Rina Aktar, 40, and Abdur Rahman, 45, who are the inhabitants of Snimulartak Ashrayan project, said once they lived in roadside tents near Ghorashal rail station. Their eyes were filled with tears when they were recalling their previous hardships.
They said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched the Ashrayan projects which have already become popular among landless people in the district.
“May Allah bless our Prime Minister,” said Rina Aktar in an emotion chocked voice.
Abul Miah, 40, a vegetable farmer of North Sadarchar Ashrayan project in Shibpur upazila said he along with other marginal people is faming vegetables on cooperative basis.
He said there are some abandoned lands in the project where they are cultivating vegetables.
He said, “We are happy getting shelter in Ashrayan project.”
Morjina Begum, a housewife of Rampur Ashrayan project of Monohardi upazila, said she is pocketing monthly about Taka 6,000 to 7,000.
Rahima Begum, another housewife of Mahamudpur Ashrayan project of Raipura upazila, said she and her family members used to live on the bank of the Meghna River before getting settler in the project area.
“We are cultivating vegetables as well rearing poultry. Our children can continue their studies without any hassle.” She also expressed her gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government.
Chairman of Raipura upazila Parishad Mijanur Rahman Chowdhury said the genuine landless have got accommodation facilities under t the project.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Mahbub Hasan Shahin said Ashrayan project is one of the ten special initiatives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He said the Ashrayan project has not only given shelter to the poor families but also created opportunities for the selfemployment, besides providing health services, sanitation, electricity, drinking water and education facilities.
