6 war gallows so far: Fate of 18 more to be decided by SC

With the execution of 1971 Al-Badr commander Mir Quasem Ali last night, a total of six persons have walked to the gallows so far for committing crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation.
Eighteen more people, who have been sentenced to death for the same crimes by two tribunals, are now in line for their fate to be decided by the apex court as some of their appeals are waiting to be heard.
Jamaat president Matiur Rahman Nizami, its secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, senior assistant secretary general Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, assistant secretary general Abdul Quader Mollah, central executive member Mir Quasem Ali and former BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury have already been executed after completing all the legal procedures. It was Mollah, whose sentence of imprisonment for life was overturned to death by the apex court, was hanged on December 12, 2013. His party colleague Mohammad Kamaruzzaman too walked to the gallows on April 11, 2015. Jamaat secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, who acted as a leader of Al-Badr in 1971, was executed along with BNP leader Chowdhury on November 21, 2015. Jamaat ameer Nizami, who played a crucial role in the killings of intellectuals at the fag end of 1971 war, was hanged on May 10, 2016. Now the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court is set to hear appeals of some other war criminals including Syed Mohammad Kaiser, founder of notorious Kaiser Bahini in Habiganj, Jamaat leaders ATM Azharul Islam and Mawlana Abdus Subhan.
