A New Nation Report :
Located at Purana Paltan’s Bijoy Nagar road, at a distance of 30 minutes drive from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, FARS Hotel and Resorts, close to Motijheel Commercial Area and Kamalapur Railway Station, was launched on the 26th of March, 1212 last. By now the modern, elegant and spacious hotel has proved to be an iconic place as residential accommodation of business and leisure travelers.
Room features of FARS Hotel and Resorts include satellite connected LCD TV, centrally air-conditioned rooms with user-friendly remote control, international direct dialing telephone, WIFI internet, mini fridge, hot and cold water, bath tub/shower, hair dryer, slipper, private safe with digital combination lock, toiletries and cosmetics.
Its complimentary benefits include pick up from airport, fruit basket, welcome drinks upon arrival, buffet breakfast, daily newspaper, toiletries and cosmetics, entry in FARS recreation club, use of health club and swimming pool, one bottle of water daily and WIFI internet.
Talks with a senior official FARS Hotel and Resorts in the afternoon on 24 March last revealed that their room guests are mostly foreigners. Normally they achieve above 50 per cent room occupancy and 35 per cent of their sales revenue comes from F & B (food and beverage).
FARS’ buffet breakfast between 6-30 and 10-30 costs BDT 633, 70-plus item buffet lunch between 12-30 and 3-30 and buffet dinner between 7 and 10-30 PM costs BDT 1518 each including VAT and tax.
“Good number of people including our room guests have buffet lunch and dinner in our restaurant and thus we pay much of VAT to public exchequer of the government,” the official said. Asked if they sold liquor to their room guests who are mostly foreigners, he said, “We are yet to get our bar license and hence we cannot sell any alcoholic liquor in our room or outside guests.”
In fact, if FARS Hotel and Resorts could have a bar license, it could collect much more VAT for the public exchequer.
Interestingly, when Westin Dhaka was pursuing their application for getting a bar license, some officials of Narcotics Control Department demanded BDT one crore worth of speed money, but when American chain hotel operator Starwoods group said that they do not have such speed money funds, no bar license was issued to them and ultimately Westin Dhaka had to go for grand opening without having any bar license to offer alcoholic drinks to the invited guests at the grand opening function. When a newspaper came out with a report on this incident, Narcotics department was forced to issue bar license to Westin Dhaka without getting any speed money from it.
