Agriculture experts at a farmers’ field day here have stressed on expanded cultivation of short duration and drought tolerant BINA dhan17 rice to increase rice output and enhance crop intensity for ensuring food security.
Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) organised the event on Friday in association with
Departmentof Agriculture Extension (DAE) to harvest BINA Dhan17 rice on the field of farmer Mokbul Hossain in village Shyampur under Mithapukur upazila.
BINA has been expanding cultivation of BINA dhan17 rice to popularise newer cropping pattern for assisting farmers in getting three to four crops from the same land annually under financial assistance of the Climate Change Trust Fund.
Deputy Director of DAE for Rangpur SM Ashraf Ali attended the event as the chief guest with model farmer of the village Abdul Halim in the chair.
Additional Deputy Director (Crop) of DAE Ziaul Haque, Mithapukur Upazila Agriculture Officer Khorshed Alam and Regional Farm Broadcasting Officer Abu Sayem addressed the occasion as special guests.
Scientific Officer at Rangpur Station of BINA and its In-charge Tanzilur Rahman Mandal delivered welcome speech on the occasion moderated by its Scientific Officer Mamata Saha.
“Average life span of the high yielding variety BINA dhan17 rice is 120 days till harvest, its cultivation requires 30 per cent less irrigation and fertilisers paving way for cultivation of early winter crops bringing more profits to farmers,” Tanzilur said.
The farmers cultivated BINA dhan17 rice variety experimentally in the village where Rangpur Regional Station of BINA provided seed support and DAE extended technical assistance, he said.
Abu Sayem said BINA evolved the short duration BINA dhan17 rice variety having short life span creating opportunities for farmers to cultivate up to four crops on the same land annually under new cropping pattern.
The chief guest said that early harvest of BINA dhan7 rice within October also created jobs for farm- labourers during lean period of Kartik month paving way for cultivation of early winter crops like vegetables, potato, mustard, wheat on the same land.
After harvesting 40 days ahead of harvesting of the traditional Aman rice varieties, farmer Mokbul Hossain got 18 mounds of yield of BINA dhan17 rice variety in terms of paddy per bigha of land.
