Farming medicinal plants at farmers’ level stressed

Speakers at a workshop here on Wednesday underlined the importance of farming medicinal plants and its quick expansion at farmers’ level for earning economical profit.
“An emphasis should be given to create much awareness among the farmers about the farming of the medicinal plants in large scale to attain both remedial and economical goals”, they said.
They made the comments while addressing a day long awareness campaign workshop on ‘Good Agricultural Practices of Medicinal Plants’-Amloki, Kalomegh, Aloevera and Aswagandha at the auditorium of Sadullapur upazila parishad.
Sadullapur upazila Agriculture office of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) organized the workshop under Second Crops Diversification project funded by Government of Bangladesh and Asian Development Bank.
Project director M. Hamidur Rahman addressed the function as the chief guest and deputy director of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin, district training officer M. Aminul Islam and regional project manager Mostafizur Rahman were present as the special guests.
With upazila agriculture office Obaidur Rahman Mondal in the chair, the inaugural workshop was also addressed, among others, by training consultant Nazrul Islam, monitoring and evaluation officers Dr. Ashoke Kumar Roy and Monjurul Islam, general secretary of Sadullapur Press Club Zillur Rahman Palash and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman.
Dr. Satyabrata Maiti, international consultant of medicinal plants, presented the key note paper on the subject through multimedia projector as resource person and said medicinal plants that are used for medicine preparations.
Dr. Maiti advised the farmers to wash hands preferably using soap under flowing clean water, and all tools and maintain personal cleanliness before handling any medicinal plants.
M. Hamidur Rahman in his speeches urged the farmers to come forward with the mentality to launch social movement in medicinal plants farming in the upazila.
