Agricultural experts and extension officials urged the farmers to produce hygienic and export quality mango in the region including its vast Barind tract for earning more foreign currency.
They mentioned need-based measures were taken for brining all the mango farmers under requisite training for making the mango harvesting and marketing process safe and hygienic.
They were addressing a daylong mango-farmers training workshop titled “Safe and Chemical-free Mango Production through Best Agricultural Management” at Bagha Upazila Parishad conference hall in the district on Tuesday.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) organised the training where more than 60 mango-farmers attended.
With Upazila Nirbahi Officer Hamidul Islam in the chair, Upazila Parishad Chairman Shafiur Rahman, Vice chairman Farhana Deel Rumi and Additional Deputy Director of DAE Monjurul Haque addressed the workshop as guests of honour.
Scientific Officer of Regional Fruit Research Station Dr Shahin Akter and Upazila Agriculture Officer Sabina Begum conducted the training sessions disseminating their expertise on how to produce safe mango.
Dr Shahin Akter mentioned that modern technologies need to be promoted commercially in mango orchards in the region during the forthcoming harvesting season for facilitating the farmers to get quality and better yield and its price.
Mango is a leading seasonal cash crop of the country’s northwest region and dominates the economy in the two districts famous for the delicious fruit.
She said there are about 30 lakh mango trees of different varieties on some 32,816 hectares in the region. “We need to be careful when harvesting, which is an important part of demonstrating good practices,” she also said.
The other discussants said farming can be done safely and easily, by practicing some basic means such as washing hands while farming, not using chemicals, temperature control, using fruit baskets for collection and using clean water for irrigation.
Community participation must for child marriage free society: More community participation is needed to free the society from the curse of child marriage as it’s a precondition to achieving the sustainable development goals, said speakers in a participatory discussion.
They viewed flourishing their latent talents together with building them as educated could be the vital means of founding Bangladesh as a dignified nation in near future.
The observations came at a coordination meeting on how to prevent
community level child marriage at Jahanabad Union Parishad Hall room under Mohanpur Upazila of the districton Monday.
The Hunger Project Bangladesh (THPB) organised the discussion in association with ‘Safe School Campaign for Girls Student’ and ‘Her Choice’Programme. More than 34 members of the civil society including public
representatives, members of civil society, headmasters and managing committee members from different schools were present in the meeting.
With UP Chairman Emaj Uddin Khan in the chair, political leaders Hazrat Ali, Shamsul Alam, UP Member Rina Begum and its secretary Nusrat Parveen and school teacher Jeker Ali spoke on the occasion. During his keynote presentation, Subrata Kumar Paul, area coordinator of THPB, said responsive support from the community, especially public
representatives, teachers, parents and members of the civil society, has become a must for reducing child marriage substantially and sustainably.
He said eradicating child marriage is imperative to creating a glorious Bangladesh and building a social resistance against child marriage is important. He said the programmes intend to involve the community people so that they can play a pivotal role in changing the social mindset on child marriage.
Besides, the venture aims to build awareness among the adolescents about their rights to reproductive health, he added.
