Rangpur Correspondent :
Bumper production of Boro paddy has failed to make the farmers of Rangpur happy due to its low market price during the current season.
Department of Agriculture sources said Boro was cultivated on about 1,35, 000 hectares of land in the district this season.
Sources said, that this season the production cost of Boro paddy has increased several times than the previous years due to the price-hike of pesticides , labour cost and other inputs.
Growers are counting huge losses as it is now being sold at Tk 420 to Tk 450 per maund whereas the production cost of per maund paddy was Tk 600 to Tk 650, farmers alleged. Nuru Mia , a Boro cultivator at Dangapara village under Taraganj upazila in Rangpur district expressed his dissatisfaction saying that he cultivated Boro on 5 bighas of land this year spending additional money for irrigation, pesticides and other inputs. But now he has to incur massive loss because of falling price of the crop.
A number of farmers of the district said that they made much effort to increase the output of the crop this season but low price of the crop made it difficult for them to cover even the production cost.
They further said, if they do not get fair price of their produce how will they survive? They urged the government to take necessary steps so that they can get fair price of their produce.
Monirampur (Jessore) Correspondent reports: Bumper Boro paddy production was achieved in Monirampur upazila but the farmers are not getting fair price and they have been compelled to sell the paddy at throwaway prices.
According to DAE source this season 1.36 thousand 748 metric tones of paddy is excepted to be produced from 29 thousand 220 hectares of land.
Earlier the target was fixed up 28 thousand 5 hundred hectares.
Since the beginning of the season good weather was prevailing and agricultural inputs such as fertilizer supply and pest management performed timely, so the production target was achieved. Recent heavy rain and storm partly damaged paddy .
On the other hand, now the paddy market is running low. It has been selling at Tk. 650 to 660 per-maund, where as the production of paddy is about Tk. 800 to 850 per-maund. The farmers are failing to sell the paddy as auto rice mills of different markets are not buying paddy.
Besides, traders formed syndicate and trying to buy paddy at cheaper rate. Mentionable , 97 thousand 7 hundred 56 MTs of paddy are needed as food for over 4 lakh 50 thousand people of this Upazila per year but more or less 2 lakh MTs Aman and Boro are produced yearly.
