Jatiya Krishak Samity and Bangladesh Khetmajur Union, the farmers’ and farm labourers’ fronts of the Workers Party of Bangladesh, have rolled out months long programme to press home for their 12-point demands which will be concluded with a march towards Dhaka in December 2019 or January 2020.
The announcement was given on Saturday at a convention of farmers and farm labourers at Mahanagar Natyamancha in Dhaka.
The 12-point charter of demands include procuring paddy and other agricultural produces direct from the growers, establishment of paddy storage depots in every upazila, giving agricultural loan at 5 per cent interest, increasing subsidies for agricultural inputs, and distribution of khas lands among the farm labourers.
The programmes include holding rallies by all units of the organisations across the country in July and August, in the hats and bazars in September, at union levels in October, rallies and processions in November and December and finally holding a march towards Dhaka with propelling a grand rally there in December or January.
Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon said at the convention that the farmers were being deprived of fair prices of their paddy and produces and the farm labourers remain unemployed throughout the year.
He demanded more subsidies and compensations for the farmers who suffered losses in producing paddy.
He called on the farmers and farm labourers to get united and wage movements so that government meets their demands.
Fazle Hossain Badsha, General Secretary of the party, said Awami League government has favoured the rich people in the proposed budget and Workers Party wants to reduce the gap between rich and poor.
Chaired by Khetmajur Union President Bimal Biswas, its leader Mahmudul Hasan Manik read out the declaration of the convention.
More than twelve hundred farmers and farm labourers from across the country took part at the convention.
Central leaders of the two organisations namely Nurul Hasan, Aminul Islam Golap, Manoj Saha, Zakir Hossain Raju, Shamsul Huda, ASMA Sobur, Abdul Majid, Badrul Alam and Mostafa Lutfullah also spoke at the opening session.
