The farmers are showing more interest in onion cultivation during this Rabi season after getting a bumper production with lucrative price of the spicy crop last season in Rangpur Agriculture region.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, the farmers have already cultivated onion in 3,713 hectares of land, 52.11 per cent against the fixed target of bringing 7,125 hectares in the region.
“A target of producing 72,821 tonnes of onion from 7,125 hectares of land has been fixed this season for all five districts under the region where sowing of onion seed continues in a full-swing now,” horticulture specialist of the DAE Khondker Md. Mesbahul Islam said today.
According to the DAE sources, the farmers have so far cultivated onion on 1,220 hectares of land in Rangpur, 737 hectares in Gaibandha, 550 hectares in Kurigram, 540 hectares in Lalmonirhat and 665 hectares in Nilphamari districts under the region.
The DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute, commercial banks, Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank and many NGOs have taken steps to make onion farming programme successful this season.
According to the market sources, the early variety of winter onion has already appeared in the local markets keeping its price reasonable within Taka 20 to 25 per kilogram though sowing of onion seed and transplantation of its seedlings still continues.
Agriculture and Environment Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Mamunur Rashid said that the farmers have been cultivating both winter and summer variety onion on more land every year increasing output of the essential commodity reducing its import in recent times. Deputy director of the DAE SM Ashraf Ali here said that onion production has been increasing following various steps taken by the government.
Predicting a bumper onion production this season, regional additional director of DAE Shah Alam lauded the Spices Research Institutes for intensifying activities in raising onion production to reduce dependence on imports saving huge foreign exchange.
