Farmers now use machines for cropping in Jessore

Farmers in several areas across the country have started to use machines for cropping. They are now using modernized rice transplanters , reaper, seeder and some other agricultural machinery.
The information was revealed at a farmers’ field day held on the ground of M K High School at Kulfaanga in Jhenaidah on Friday.
International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Jessore Hub and International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) organised the programme under Feed the Future Programme, USAID funded projects of Rice Value Chain (RVC) and Cereal System Initiative for South Asia- Mechanization and Irrigation (CSISA-MI).
The farmers were introduced with various agricultural machinery and mechanized cropping system in the programme. They also visited high value rice variety plots that transplanted by rice transplanting machine in aman season and observed reaping by power tiller mounted reaper followed by mustard sowing with strip tillage and minimum tillage which helps to retain soil water much more than traditional practice.
The farmers were informed that rice yield has been increased by 8% than that of hand transplanting for using machine.
 Farmers also observed wheat sowing by Power tiller operated-Seeder with Strip tillage, reduced tillage.
 Machines like rice transplanter, reaper, seeder and other agricultural machinery feasible to use in cropping systems were displayed by the private sector likely RFL, Metal, ACI, Janata Engineering for the promotion of agro-machinery.
Hamidur Rahman, director general, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) was present as the chief guest in the programme while it was attended among others by Muhammad Nuruzzaman, Project Management Coordinator, Economic Growth, USAID Bangladesh, Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam , CSO, RARS, BARI, Jessore region, Sk. Nazim Uddin, Project Director, Farm Mechanization Project, DAE , AK Arzoo, executive director, JCF, Timothy Russell, CoP, FtF Bangladesh Rice Value Chain Project, IRRI, William J. Collis, senior project leader, CSISA-MI, CIMMYT, Subrata Kumar Chakrabarty, Project Manager, CSISA-MI, CIMMYT and Kevin Robbins, Deputy Project Manager, CSISA-MI, IDE-Bangladesh. Khairul Abrar, Additional Director, DAE, Jessore Region chaired the programme.
