BSS, Rajshahi :
Farmers and share-croppers need proper knowledge about the importance of biodiversity, natural resource conservation and climate change issues so that they can contribute to this field.
There should be time-fitting measures and field-level learning for them as there is no way but to natural resource conservation in the region particularly the vast Barind tract to face the adverse impact of climate change.
Conservation of natural resources like native crop seeds, fish and birds’ species and other wildlife has become indispensable for facing the adverse impacts of climate change, said Dr Redwanur Rahman, Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences of Rajshahi University, while talking to BSS here on Thursday.
He mentioned that a large number of water bodies and wetlands have become derelict in the region due to lack of adequate rainfall posing a serious threat to the biodiversity, especially the livelihood of the poor and marginal people of the area.
The existing agricultural system has also started facing threat because of the climatic change. So, there is no alternative to adopting a comprehensive measure to face climatic change and its adverse impacts.
“Role of Biodiversity Conservation in Protecting Environment should be our main slogan,” he added referring to evidence-based method to support natural resource conservation in the dried area and its prospects and challenges.
Obviously, we have to devise ways and means on how to cope with the adverse impact of climate change. Integrated approach has become an urgent need to this end.
Sharing his expertise Dr Rahman opined that many native crops and vegetable varieties are gradually being declined due to various reasons.
Prof Bidhan Chandra Das of Department of Zoology of Rajshahi University mentioned that Bangladesh as well as other developing countries needs more academics and experts to have better training and clear understanding on conserving natural resources.
“More field level research on global warming and integrated crop management and problems and mitigation should be promoted in the region,” he opined.
He said responsible management and conservation of the natural resources is very vital on local, regional and international scales to contain the climate changing related challenges.
Terming the depletion of natural resources as a major threat to the habitat he said the higher education institutes have an essential role to play in developing strategies and policies to address the challenges.
Time has come to build wider network beyond the partner higher education institutions and creating platform for open dialogues to initiate regional research programmes on regional problems and solution on the climate change issue.
