The farmers of different areas of the district are showing more interest in commercial cultivation of Palong Shak (spinach) as they are getting additional profit.
Earlier, most of the farmers of the region cultivated Palong Shak on limited basis just for meeting local demands. But the scenario has changed now as in recent years the farmers are cultivating the leafy vegetable commercially and supplying their produce to different parts of the country including the capital, sources said.
Nur Mohammad, a farmer of Keshobpur Purbopara village at Sadar upazila said that he has been cultivating Palong Shak on his land for the last few years and earning satisfactory profit. This year he has cultivated it on 40 decimals of land and already earned Tk 6000 from its sale. He is optimistic of achieving more profit. At the beginning of harvesting per kg Palong Shak was sold at Tk 35 to Tk 40 in markets while presently it is sold at Tk 10 to Tk 15 per kg, he also said. He said he has also cultivated some other vegetables besides farming Palong Shak. He prefers vegetable farming as it is more lucrative than cultivation of paddy and some other crops, he added.
Khalil Mia, another farmer of Jummakhanpara at Ranipukur area of Mithapukur upazila said sowing seed of Plong Shak begins from the bengali month of Kartik and it continues till Poush. Its harvesting is started within 30 to 40 days after sowing seeds, he added.
According to DAE sources commercial cultivation of spinach and some other leafy vegetables is on the rise in the region owing to huge demands and profit.
