The soil and weather in Hossainpur Upazila in Kishreganj are suitable for coriander cultivation. The scent of this spice flower has intoxicated the char farmers, peasants and travel thirsty people. The scent of spice flowers and young leaves fascinated nature.
Coriander is mainly a winter Rabi crop. But even though Rabi is a crop, it is now cultivated in winter and summer. Coriander can be cultivated throughout the year.
In Hossainpur, char farmers cultivate coriander extensively. This year also it has been planted widely as a berry crop. As coriander is a profitable crop, local farmers are cultivating it.
Delwar Hossain Muktar Mridha, a farmer of Charkati Hari village in Jinari union of the upazila. He said, he has cultivated coriander leaves in 50 acres of land this year. The cost was Tk 2,000 . He market price of it , will be Tk 10 thousand. The farmer is hopeful that he will sell Tk30,000..
Like Mukta Mridha, Alam, a farmer from Charkatari village, and Mukul, a farmer from Saheb’s Char village, said that coriander is a profitable crop. It can be produced with other crops. So it does not cost much to produce.
Demand for coriander leaves is also high.
Therefore, farmers are quite optimistic that coriander will have a good yield.
Upazila Agriculture Officer, agriculturist Imrul Kayes said coriander is a beneficial crop as a companion crop. He also said that the interest among the farmers in coriander production has increased day by day.
