Farmers happy over excellent litchi flowering in N districts

The farmers are happy over excellent litchi flowering amid favourable climatic conditions with a hope of bumper yield of the juiciest, tasty and fleshy fruit this season in the northern districts.
With the advent of the spring at the eve of departure of the winter, massive litchi blooming has been continuing amid adequately favorable and the sunny weather that helps better flowering now everywhere.
According to sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), over 80 percent of litchi trees in about 9,000 small, medium and big-sized litchi orchards and homesteads have already bloomed massively as the process still continues.
Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam said commercial litchi cultivation has become popular as hundreds of farmers have achieved self-reliance through farming the fruits in recent years.
The farmers have mostly been cultivating high yielding varieties like China-3 and Bedana, early varieties like Bombay, Mozaffarpuri and Madrazi and late variety Kanthali litchi on more lands every year following repeated bumper productions and lucrative prices.
Khondker Islam suggested the farmers to spray 80 percent Sulphur on litchi tress if mite attack is found following rise in temperature during fruit formation stage after budding from mid-March for getting better production.
Besides, he suggested for spraying ‘Mentozeb’ or ‘Propikonazole’ as per recommended dose to prevent powdery nose mildew or anthrax those might attack the young leaves or blooming flower twigs or buds following rise in temperature amid cloudy sky.
While visiting a huge litchi orchard of Atiar Rahman in village Damodarpur near Baro Maidan under Sadar upazila here yesterday, this Reporter observed excellent flowering in almost all litchi trees there.
Talking to BSS, litchi growers Harunur Rashid, Aminul Haque, Nilchand Roy, Rostam Ali, Abdus Sobhan, Shachindra Nath and Fazle Hossain said they are expecting bumper litchi yield this time like in the previous seasons to earn excellent profits.
Farmers Nawajesh Ali, Solaiman Haque, Abdul Hye, Kafil Uddin, Abdus Samad, Mosaddek Hossain and Kamrul Hassan expressed their happiness over excellent litchi flowering and hoped to earn better profits getting bumper production this year.
Rangpur Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Afzal Hossain and Agriculture & Environment Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Mamunur Rashid predicted bumper litchi production this season if the climatic condition remains favourable till June next.
Associate Director (Agriculture) of BRAC International (South Asia & Africa) Dr M A Mazid said commercial litchi farming continues expanding bringing fortune to hundreds of the farmers following bumper production with excellent market price in recent years.
Deputy Director of the DAE Zulfiquer Haider said the farmers have boosted commercial basis cultivation of litchi successfully in their orchards in Dinajpur, Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh and other districts in recent years.
He also expressed satisfaction over excellent nascent in litchi trees both in the orchards and homesteads and expected a bumper production of the fleshy and juiciest fruit amid favourable climatic condition in the northern districts this season.
