Farmers’ field-day cum training programme on “To motivate the farmers for cultivating flood and drought tolerant rice varieties” was held at Ghugudima village under Chapainawabgang Sadar upazila on Thursday. International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) organized the programme. Deputy Director of DAE, Chapainawabganj Md Monzurul Huda addressed the event as the chief guest while agriculture officer of Gomastapur Md. Masud Hossain and Dr. Saidul Islam, Senior Specialist, STRASA, IRRI attended the programme as special guests. Dr. Md. Jahangir Firoz, agriculture officer of sadar upazila presided over the programme. The chief guest said about 50,430 hectares of land was covered by T-aman in Chapainawabgonj district. Among the varieties, the area under BRRI Dhan 51 is increasing every year and it is now about 20%.Other speakers in the function said that flash flood & drought badly affect the crops including Aman rice every year. Even Swarna rice, the most popular crop in this area is not giving expected yield due to change of climate. That’s why BRRI dhan 51 is the best option to replace the Swarna variety for Aman season in this area, they added .
The speakers also disclosed that flood tolerant varieties BRRI Dhan 51, 52, 79, Binadhan-11 & 12 and drought tolerant with short duration varieties BRRI dhan 56, 57 & 71 are released in collaboration with IRRI, BRRI and BINA.
The advantage of the short-duration rice varieties is that the small and marginal farmers are able to cultivate at least three crops every year on the same land with easy escape the drought stress. A total of 200 male and female farmers, seed dealers, community people, civil society members and local elite persons took part at the field day programme. This event was funded by Bill and Malenda Gates (BMGF) foundation through Stress Tolerant Rice for Africa and South Asia (STRASA) project.
