Farmers expect bumper mustard production in Khulna division

Farmers of 10 districts of Khulna division are expecting a bumper production of mustard in the current rabi season.
Encouraged by good yield of the winter crop and its fair price during the last several years, hundreds of farmers of the region have cultivated the winter crop on larger areas of land.
Easy cultivation process and lower production cost is also a reason behind popularity of mustard cultivation among the farmers in the area, said DAE officials and farmers.
The farmers of Jessore, Narail, Jhenidah, Magura, Khustia, Chuadanga, Meherpur, Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat districts have cultivated mustard on 67,440 hectares of land with the production target of 80,922 tonnes, officials said.
District wise break up of land is as follows: 16,556 hectares of land have been brought under mustard cultivation in Jessore, 5,664 hectares in Narail, 12,092 hectares in Magura, 10,013 hectares in Jhenidah, 5,408 hectares in Khustia,6,217 hectares in Meherpur, 3,184 hectares in Chuadanda, 412 hectares in Khulna, 7,196 hectares in Satkhira and 698 hectares land in Bagerhat district.
Most of the lands have been cultivated with varieties invented by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) like BARI Sharisha-9, Tori 7 and Sampad.
DAE tried to pursue the farmers to cultivate high yielding varieties of mustard invented by BARI to boost production.
During this correspondent’s recent visit to different areas of Jessore and Narail districts, farmers said they are hopeful to get bumper production of mustard.
AZM Momtazul Karim, additional director (AD) of Jessore Regional Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), told BSS that necessary training, agri inputs, quality seeds, and agri-loans have been provided to the farmers to make mustard farming programme a success.
BRAC brings smile mustard growers s in Bogra
Bogra Correspondent adds: BRAC is training the farmers with modern technology for self sufficient in food and agriculture security at Dhunat Upazila in Bogra.
BRAC Agriculture Department has followed modern technological system to traing farmers for modern farming.
In response of this activities 495 farmers have cultivated mustard seed BAR-15 in 212 acres of land. They ploughed that crops at Gosaibari Unioun. They are happy to get bumper harvest .Sub Assistant Agriculture Officer Md.Abdus Satter and BRAC Upazila Agriculture and Food Security Programme Officer Md.Faruk Hussein attended the training .
