Farmers expect bumper maize yield in Jashore region

Officials of DAE and farmers are expecting a bumper maize production as the plants are growing excellent everywhere in the region this season.
A total of 88,624 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation exceeding the target in six districts. The districts are Jashore, Jhenaidah, Chuadanga, Kushtia, Meherpur and Magura.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) had set a target for cultivating maize on 76,819 hectares of land whereas the farmers have finally brought 88,624 hectares under the cash crop farming in six districts. Farmers cultivated maize on 638 hectares of land in Jashore district, 46,121 hectares in Chuadanga,17,420 hectares in Jhenaidah, 8,475 hectares in Kushtia, 15,835 hectares in Meherpur and 135 hectares of land in Magura district.
Md.Emdad Hossain Sheikh, acting additional director of DAE Jashore region, said farmers got fair prices of maize during the last couple of years and as a result they are now eager to cultivate more maize on their land. Emdad Hossain said bumper maize production is expected due to favourable weather conditions along with adequate supplying of necessary seeds, fertilisers and pesticides.
The government and non-government banks had already disbursed crop loans among the farmers to make the cultivation a complete success in the districts.
The farmer cultivated high yielding maize varieties- Kaberi,Super Shine-2760, Sunsine, Elite and Pioneer V-92 for boosting its production. Boro paddy farming of 1, 27,740 hectares progressing fast in Gaibandha GAIBANDHA, Feb 04, 2019 (BSS) – The farming of Boro paddy, a high yielding crop, has been progressing fast in all the seven upazilas of the district during the current season amid much enthusiasm. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has set a target to bring a total of 1, 27,740 hectares of land under the Boro cultivation this year with the production target of 5,21,789 metric tons of clean rice, official sources said.
Of the total, some 20,478 hectares of land would be brought under the farming in Sadar upazila, 15,339 in Sadullapur upazila, 13,420 in Palashbari, 30,463 in Gobindaganj upazila, 24,930 in Sundarganj upazila, 14,623 in Shaghata upazila and 8,427 in Fulchhari upazila, they said. The farmers have already prepared seed beds on over 7500 hectares of low land. The peasants now are passing busy times with transplanting the boro seedlings with the hopes of getting desired output, said Al Mahmud Sarker, a farmer of Barobaldia village under Sadar upazila. To make the cultivation a grand success, necessary measures had been taken to supply fertilizers, insecticides and other agri inputs to the farmers at fair prices with ensuring irrigation facilities.
 said an official of DAE. Besides, the department is imparting trainings for the farmers in field level to boost production, said Abul Kalam Azad, an high official of the DAE here.
Apart from this, the commercial and scheduled banks have taken initiatives to disburse loan to the farmers on easy terms to help them cultivate the crop without economical troubles, said Abdus Sattar, an official of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank.
Talking to the BSS, acting deputy director (DD) of DAE Showkat Osman said the farmers were advised to transplant the raised seedlings of the boro paddy on their respective land as per the suggestions of the field level sub assistant agriculture officers.
He said over 75 percent transplantation of boro seedlings had already been completed in the district and it would continue till February 28.
