Farmers of Majhigati union in Sadar upazila in Gopalganj are benefiting greatly from the cultivation of bean (IPSHA-2) as the crop is being sold at lucrative price in the local markets recently.
According to sources, the newly harvested bean IPSHA-2 is being selling at taka 30 and taka 35 per kilogram in the local markets.
The farmers have started harvesting the early variety bean IPSHA-2 they have cultivated on their lands after harvesting the short duration variety Aman paddies like Digha dhan, kajal dhan, swamalata dhan, BINA dhan and etc. in this region.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj official sources said, a total of 130 hectares of land have been brought under bean IPSHA-2 cultivation in the district of them 50 hectares in Sadar Upazila and 14 hectares in Majhigati union under Sadar Upazila in the district sources said. Nidiram Majumder (32) a bean cultivator of village Bagajuri under Majhigati union is Sadar Upazila told This correspondent. he had cultivated bean on 10 decimal of land origin of “IPSHA-2” this season at a cost oftaka 15,000/-. He is now selling around 20 maunds of bean in a week which market price taka 24,000 and expects to earn a net profit of taka above 1,00,000/- in the end of the season.
Local traders said around 100 maunds of bean are supplied daily to district headquarter and various parts of the country from Bagajuri areas. The supply is expected to double in a few days, they added.
Ruma Sarker, a field officer of Dalnia block under DAE, Gopalganj said bean cultivation were given training on how to control pest without using insecticides and providing quality bean seeds & inputs for achieve bean IPSHA-2 cultivation.
Samir Kumar Gwashami, Deputy Director (DD), Agriculture, Gopalganj told this correspondent bean cultivation IPSHA-2 has marked a sharp rise over last three years as farmers have found it more profitable.
