Khulna Correspondent :
Though the farmers of Khulna district achieved a record bumper production of Boro paddy this season, they are being deprived of getting fair prices due to syndicate of traders .
Sources said, every year during the harvest traders fall prices by making syndicate. this year they may do so, apprehended some farmers. As a result the farmers may not get the value of their labors.
Meanwhile, at one side farmers are raising ripe paddy at their houses and on the other side paddy is also coming in the market. This year Tk.750 to Tk 800 is given for per mound (40kg) paddy which is less than that of Tk. 250 to Tk 150. Production is higher than that of the last year and traders are taking opportunity by decreasing rate through syndicate, alleged some farmers. Rafiqul Islam , 52 , a farmer of village Alaipur in Rupsha Upazila told this correspondent that he had produced Boro paddy on the land of 1 bigha including his farming and taking to the house. He expects to get 30 mounds of paddy and market price of which would be Tk. 24 thousand . In this situation, he may not get fair price It the government fix a price, farmers could get fair price and live well , Rafiq thinks. Besides, traders can’t make whimsically syndicate business by falling price, he added.
Jalal Molla , 48 another farmer in the same Upazila said, he got 40 mounds of paddy, but he dared not to sell fearing the falling price cause by the traders through syndicate. Paddy traders sources said, new paddy is wet and after drying its weigh decreases. so, new paddy is cheaper than that of old one. Besides, cost of carrying milling and electricity are higher this year and as such the price of paddy would be less this year, according to traders.
Imdad Khalashi, 53 , a trader told this correspondent that they are not making any syndicate and they are not giving less price of paddy to the farmers. Farmers are counting losses due to fall in boro paddy prices and many of them selling low prices at local markets as they need money badly to provide their families. Agriculture Extension Department sources said, a total of 83 thousand hectares of land were brought under Boro Paddy cultivation in the district this year and the yield reached over 3 lakh metric tones.
Food control office sources said, no government order was still come for collecting boro paddy this year. The government has fixed price earlier so that the traders might not make syndicate, sources added.
Quazi Anisuzzaman, Deputy Director of Khulna Agriculture Department said, cost of production of Boro paddy this year would be cheaper than the last year due to favorable weather, adequate and smooth supply of fertilizer.
He said, adding that the government would take proper steps to ensure fair prices of paddy and would take notice so that the farmers might overcome their losses.
