Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Tuesday removed scam-hit Farmers Bank Managing Director AKM Shamim for violating the banking laws and hampering the interests of the depositors.
BB Governor Dr Fazle Kabir issued an order in this respect.
AKM Shamim has also been barred from working in any bank or financial institution for the next three years. “The central bank took the decision as per the Section 46 of the Bank Companies Act,” BB spokesperson Subhankar Saha told The New Nation.
His removal was the fourth of such action taken by the BB against a commercial bank’s MD in the last three and a half years.
The country’s banking regulator earlier fired BASIC Bank MD Kazi Faqurul Islam, Agrani Bank CEO Syed Abdul Hamid, after a BB investigation found both of them involved in corruption.
Recently, BB also removed NRB Commercial Bank’s Managing Director Dewan Mujibur Rahman on charge of his alleged involvement in a number of loan scandals involving around Tk 700 crore.
