Agriculture secretary Eunusur Rahman Saturday underscored the need for raising farm sector growth up to 4 per cent to reach the country to a middle income one by 2021.
“As now the farm sector growth stands around 2-3 per cent despite facing all the shortcomings including land depletion, rising of population and persuading of tradition agricultural methods-so, the implementation of technological breakthrough can make it possible to raise the farm sector growth to achieve the desired goal”, said the agriculture secretary.
The agriculture secretary hoped this while he was addressing as the chief guest at an inaugural session of a workshop on ‘SRDI : Present and Future’ at city’s Khamarbari here.
The Soil Resource Development Institute (SRDI) under the Ministry of Agriculture organized the function with its director Khandker Moyeenuddin in the chair.
Despite all the shortcomings like frequent natural disasters, socio-political unrest, depletion of crop land and over use of chemical fertilizers have taken forward the country to produce as much as 3.87 crore metric tons of food grains from the very low production level in 1970 with only one crore tones, he said.
Presently, country’s annual GDP growth rate is hovering at 6 per cent for the last 20 years which even rare in India, Eunus said, adding that “If we can raise our farm growth to 4 per cent with our targeted GDP growth then the country will definitely to reach a middle income country by the tentative period.”
Md Nazmul Hasan, Principal Scientific Officer (PSO) of SRDI presented a keynote paper on the future planning of the SRDI in agriculture development.
The inaugural session also addressed, among others, by Dr Abul Kalam Azad, Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) as the special guest.
Scientists, officials and representatives from different government and non-government organizations also participated.
