“The damage done to the Bangladesh by Farakka is ominous. It has died up most of the rivers of southwest Bangladesh, harming ecology and economy of the country,” he said this while addressing a discussion as the chief guest at the Jatiya Press Club on Saturday afternoon.
The discussion was organised by Bhashani followers Parishad to mark the historic Farakka long march day with its chairman Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury in the chair.
Prof. Serajul Islam said, Maulana Bhashini had realized that the barrage would impact in the environment of Bangladesh. It will kill our rivers and people. He (Bhashni) was against of the establishment of the barrage.
Maulana Bhashani had led the long march accompanied by the mass people against the barrage in 1976, he said.
The educationist also said, there is a need of a pioneer like Maulana Bhashani to lead the nation in a crisis moment.
This great mass leader had spent his life for achieving the rights of proletariat. He was the real friend and guardian of the working class people.
In his speech, Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury said the prices of essential goods have increased in the holy month of Ramzan. India has remained as a close friend of us but it should not try to make Bangladesh its business centre.
Senior journalist Mahfuz Ullah alleged that there
is an attempt to erage the image of Bhashini from the history. If any nation ignores its hero, they could not go ahead as a modern nation.
In the discussion, Bhasani Follower Parishad secretary general Sheikh Rafiqul Islam and presidium member former MP Zahir Uddin spoke on the occasion.
