Avijit killing: Farabi put on 10-day remand

A court here on Tuesday placed Shafiur Rahman Farabi, the prime suspect in the expatriate writer and blogger Avijit Roy murder case, on a 10-day remand.Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Rezaul Karim passed the order when inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of police Mohammad Fazlur Rahman, also the investigation officer of a case filed over the murder, produced him before his court seeking 10 days’ remand for him.Earlier on Monday, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Farabi from Jatrabari area in the city in connection with the gruesome killing of the blogger.Later, he was handed over to the DB and shown arrested in the case filed by Avijit’s father, Prof Ajoy Roy, with Shahbagh Police Station.Farabi issued death threats to Avijit on social network Facebook on several occasions.Earlier in 2013, Farabi was arrested in a case filed for issuing death threats to the Imam who conducted the namaz-e-janaza for slain blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider.However, Farabi got temporary bail from the High Court in the case. Avijit Roy, son of former DU teacher Prof Ajoy Roy and founder of Mukta-Mona blog, was killed and his wife Rafida Afrin Banya injured as unidentified criminals stabbed them near TSC on the Dhaka University campus on Thursday night. Prof Ajoy Roy filed the case against some unnamed people on Friday.Avijit along with his wife, an expatriate couple living in the USA, returned home a few days back as his two books were published on the occasion of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair.
