City Desk :
People from all walks of life on Monday underscored the need for developing awareness against militancy and terrorism at family and community levels in order to keep growing adults on the right track of their development.
This was expressed by mourners who braved drizzle and crossed miles to reach Army Stadium to pay homage to the foreigners and locals killed together in a militant attack in a tranquil cafe in city’s Gulshan diplomatic area on Friday night.
“It’s time for greater unity and forge a social movement against such heinous acts,” said
Shafiqur Rahman, a former official of the United Nations. “We must come out from a culture of dependence on government for everything. Now is the time to rise and forge social movement.”
Rahman said ‘Allah is Great or Allahu Akbar’ is not a slogan for terrorism. Rather it’s a
slogan to express the greatness of God. So, it is an utmost duty of every parent to carefully watch their children’s movement and their friends who have an influence on them.
He said it was impossible to ensure safety and security for 160 million people by a handful of law enforcers. The people themselves have to contribute to defuse acts of terrorism through motivation at community and family levels.
Mamunur Rashid, noted actor and playwright, observed that a shrinking space for arts, culture and literature has been motivating young adults to be derailed. He said young people hardly have opportunities for recreation and this gap has been paving ways for fanatics to allure young minds to militancy.
Hasan Arif, general secretary of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote, said a national unity was a must to prevent militancy in the country. He said a greater unity should also be formed among family members, neighbours and relations to keep common eyes over growing adults.
“Hardly can you find a man who supports this kind of notorious acts in Bangladesh. By
tradition, the people of this country are peace-loving and secular in mindset,” he said adding that some people have been trying to destroy the long tradition.
Mayors of Dhaka South and North City Corporations, diplomats, members of victims’ families, politicians, academicians, cultural activists, business leaders and individuals placed wreaths at the Stadium and expressed their solidarity to root out terrorism from Bangladesh, ever known as a peaceful nation.
