The jail authorities have started counting 15 days time to take the next course of action for Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman from February 19 when the death warrant was read out to him at Dhaka Central Jail.
However, the Supreme Court released the verdict’s full text on Friday.
“We have started counting time from February 19. We have received his (Kamaruzzaman’s) death
warrant from tribunal on that day. We read out the warrant to him on the same day,” Senior Superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail Farman Ali said on Saturday.
On November 3, 2014, the Supreme Court had upheld the May 9, 2013 death penalty handed down by the Tribunal-2 for crimes Kamaruzzaman committed against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
Meanwhile, the family members of Kamaruzzaman led by his wife Nurunnahar met with him in the prison on Saturday morning. It was the family members’ regular visit to him, one of his counsels Mohammad Shishir Manir said.
Kamaruzzaman’s daughter, daughter-in-law, three nieces and a nephew and a brother-in-law accompanied her during the 40-minute meeting, which started around 10:40am.
They discussed various family issues with Kamaruzzaman, the lawyer said quoting family members.
“Kamaruzzaman was not worried with the Appellate Division’s judgement. He told his family members that he would get justice in the review hearing. But he expressed his anxiety over the safety of his family members,” he said.
