A case accusing local Awami League activists over the murder of Gazipur’s Kaliakoir unit Juba League leader Rafiqul Islam has been filed by his family members.
The victim’s brother filed the case with Kaliakoir police on Saturday night accusing 22 local Awami League (AL) activists, said police. Juba League is the youth affiliate of the ruling party. Investigating officer Sub Inspector Md Razib Khan said that Kaliakoir Upazila unit AL Organising Secretary Md Akbar Ali, municipality unit Joint Convener Md Mosharraf Hossain Shikder, municipality unit AL student front
leaders Md Reaz Uddin and Md Khattaf Mollah and six others have been named in the case. It also accuses another 10 to 12 unidentified people for the murder on Aug 21.
“Police have detained ‘Sohel and Mohammad Hossain the same night. We are trying to arrest others,” said investigating officer Khan. Meanwhile, the local Juba League and Awami League called for a half-day shutdown at the Upazila protesting the killing on Sunday. Rafiqul – the former president of the Upazila Juba League unit – was killed after addressing an event marking the Aug 21, 2004 grenade attack on Friday. Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq was present at the event.
