Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said that family agriculture can provide nutritious food for people.
The minister said this on Thursday while speaking as the chief guest at a function organized at the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC) to celebrate World Food Day. The theme of this year was “Family agriculture: Protection of Nature, food for all”.
The minister said that a family can easily ensure its nutrition from their family farm. She said that the country had made great strides in agriculture under the incumbent government and that the country was on the brink of food self-sufficiency.
She called upon all to ensure proper execution of the government’s integrated agriculture management program in the context of climate change. She also said that the government was planning to provide lunch to all school-going children to ensure proper nutrition for all.
The minister said that the struggle for food and nutrition was critical in the country’s effort to be a middle-income country by 2021. Chaired by agriculture secretary Dr A S M Nazmul Islam, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by Fisheries’ and Livestock Minister Mohammad Sayedul Huq, parliamentary standing committee member on agriculture, Abdul Mannan, and FAO country representative, Mike Robson.
