Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister AKM Shahjahan Kamal says the families of those killed in the US-Bangla airplane crash in Nepal will receive at least $50,000 each as compensation.
In a press conference at the Secretariat on Wednesday the minister said the insurance company will provide the amount to the families, while those injured in the crash will be compensated according to their medical bills.
The civil aviation and tourism minister said according to the Warsaw Convention, each family of the deceased will get an approximately $50,000 from the insurance company after some legal steps are taken. A US-Bangla aircraft crashed on at the Tribhuvan airport in Kathmandu, Nepal on Mar 12 killing at
least 50 passengers of the 71 on board. There were 27 Bangladeshi nationals on board, including the cabin crew. Chief Executive Officer of US-Bangla Airlines Imran Asif said they have noted the whereabouts of all passengers killed or injured in the crash. “They need succession certificates to claim the compensation from insurance company as per the law. The insurance company has also appointed a lawyer who is keeping touch with all families. Also, advertisements have been published in newspaper and families were informed to provide necessary information,” he said. Asif said local insurance agents for the crashed aircraft of US-Bangla Airlines are Sadharan Bima Corporation and Sena Kalyan Insurance Company Ltd.
Sena Kalyan Insurance Company had reinsured half of the amount with Sadharan Bima Corporation and the other half with a foreign company though insurance broker KM Dastur and Co.
Sadharan Bima Corporation also reinsured it with a foreign company through KM Dastur and Co. The crashed aircraft of US-Bangla has been reinsured with London-based leading reinsurance company XL Catlin and other reinsurers. Asif stated US-Bangla airlines marked it as their top priority to distribute compensation to all injured or deceased’s families, adding the company will not claim any compensation for its aircraft. He added each family of the deceased will get at least $50,000. “The time length before compensation is received may differ from one family to another. The insurance company will provide compensation once the procedure is done and US-Bangla Airlines cannot manipulate it,” he said. He also said compensation amount for the injured will differ between victims depending on their number of days for treatment. The civil aviation and tourism minister instructed lawyers versed in civil aviation law to assist families of the deceased in getting compensation.
