Fakhrul`s meeting foiled by police

Staff Reporter :A discussion meeting of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been foiled due to police obstruction. Agriculturists Association of Bangladesh (AAB), a pro-BNP organisation, was scheduled to hold the meeting in Krishibid Institution at Farmgate in the city on Saturday to mark the Independence Day. Mirza Fakhrul was the chief guest of the discussion on “Corruption and Misrule: Imperilled Indolence”. Secretary General of thesaid that on March 28 they booked the seminar hall of the Krishibid Institution for April 2 (Saturday). As per schedule, the AAB members from across the country came here to join the meeting in the afternoon, while the AAB also completed all the preparations in this regard, he added. “Just after beginning of the function, police obstructed us. Police told us that any programme of BNP Secretary General wouldn’t be allowed,” said Hasan Jafir Tuhin. He protested and condemned the incident. Maksud, an on duty police, said that they did not allow the discussion meeting as per directive of the higher authorities. Mirza Fakhrul did not attend the spot during the police obstruction, while the AAB members left the spot after the police obstruction. Meanwhile, Mirza Fakhrul in a press statement criticised the government for using the law enforcers to harass the leaders and the activists of the opposition parties. “The arrest-trade and harassing the opposition men by using the law enforcing agencies have become a regular phenomenon,” he said. He demanded release of JASAS leader Dr Arifur Rahman Mollah who was arrested on Friday night. Protesting arrest of Dr Arif, the BNP leader said that the police arrested him in a false and fabricated case as part of government’s harassing the opposition men. The current government wants to cling to power through arresting and repressing the leaders and the activists of the opposition parties. False and fabricated cases are being filed one after another against leaders and activists, he added.
