A Dhaka court Thursday granted bail to BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a police constable killing case but rejected his bail pleas in two other murder cases.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rezaul Karim passed the order on
Thursday afternoon after hearing. Mirza Fakhrul was denied bail in two bus arson attack cases: Of the two cases, one was filed for arson attack in the Shahbagh area while the other was lodged for a similar attack at Malibagh Chowdhury Para. Earlier in the morning, Mirza Fakhrul was produced to the CMM Court from Kashimpur Jail for hearing on the petitions.
On the night of December 24 last year, police constable Md Ferdous was burnt alive and two other constables suffered burn injuries as unidentified miscreants set a bus on fire by pouring petrol at Bangla Motor intersection of the capital.
Later, the police filed a case against some BNP leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul with Ramna Police Station.
On March 16, three BNP leaders including Fakhrul, surrendered to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court and were sent to jail denying their bail pleas.
On March 23, Dhaka’s Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court also rejected the BNP leaders’ bail petitions.
Defence lawyer Sanaullah Miah filed bail petitions for the BNP leader in two murder cases filed with Ramna police station and another murder case filed with Shahbagh police station.
On January 20, the High Court granted eight weeks, (till March 29) anticipatory bail to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in the three murder cases and directed him to appear before the subordinate after the tenure of the bail.
